Success-story from Amsale S.
Addis Ababa, September 2012
Success story of Amsale S.
My name is Amsale S., I was born on March 11, 1985 Eth.Calender, (1993 German Calender). My father is Ato S. Mengiste and my mother is Wro Ti. Baye. I grew up in Kirkos Sub-City, Addis Ababa, house number 604.
I started school in 1993 Eth.Cal. (2000 Germ.Cal.) at Worha Yekatit Primary School where I attended my primary cycle education from grade 1 to 8. During my stay in the above school I scored excellent grades in Primary School Leaving Certificate Examination (Grade 8), and moved to Shimelis Habte Secondary School where I attended grades 9 and 10. At the end of grade 10, I took the Ethiopian National Examination, which passed the result was excellent and I was promoted to Preparatory Class. I was then assigned at Abyot Kirs Secondary School which I attended until I completed grade 12. Then I took the National Entrance Exam and having scored excellent grades, a year ago I was able to join the government owned University of Axum, which is located in the northern part of Ethiopia.
Before I was included Kinderhaus ADDIS Sponsorship scheme, I was in a critical problem and my situation would have been very difficult, since the income of my family was not sufficient enough to fulfill my basic needs as well as to send me to school regularly. The income of the family was on daily labor; my father works in woodwork activities whereas my mother is engagend in gathering dry wastes with others and selling them as source of fuel. All in all, my parents are not engaged in constant jobs – my father works whenever he gets opportunity. Therefore, my familiy led a hand to mouth living condition. Under these circumstances it would have been very difficult for me to get access to education and have my basic needs fulfilled; the sum total of this condition would have had a negative effect on my education.
But after I started getting the support through Kinderhaus ADDIS Sponsorship Scheme, I have been provided with all the necessary school materials (such as exercise books, pencils, pens, and school uniform), shoes, one hot nutritious meal a day and coverage of school fee. As a result I was motivated and was able to attend my classes actively and courageously. Accordingly, I wake up early in the morning and go to school on time, do the given home work properly, which helped me to score excellent marks; I became a very competent student and was promoted to the next class two times in a year. In general, after getting the support, my experience in the school was positive and constructive.
Currently, Im a first year student at the University of Axum in the field of Economics. At the moment I am back in Addis with my family for the summer vacation. Soon, I will go back to Axum to attend my second year education. I, therefore, would like to express my deepest thanks to Kinderhaus ADDIS for facilitating all the provisions that I needed.
In the long run, I want to support my needy family and those very poor children who are not able to get access to education due to economic problems of their families, I would like to say thank you for your humanitarian support that helped me to enroll in university education. I hope your humanitarian service would be extended to many other needy children.
Once again I thank you very much for changing my life from darkness to a brighter future. Having been overwhelmed by the support that I have received from you, I lack appropriate words to express my feelings.
The only thing I can say is THANK YOU once again! May God give you the desire to continue your humanitarain work and increase your generosity.
God bless you all and your work
Amsale S.

Success-strory from Yohannes T.
Addis Abeba, September 2012
Success story of Yohannes T.
My name is Yohannes T., I am 19 years old and I used to live with my father in Kirkos Sub-City, Kebele 08/09, house 090, in the project intervention area. My fathers name is T. Haile and my mothers name is E. Sahile. I was a little boy, when my mother passed away.
Since then it became the responsibility of my father to become the bread winner of the family. He was continuously struggling to break through poverty but he did not find it that easy to cover the family basic necessities and at the same time run the household with the small amount of income he gets from his daily labor work. Considering all the above problems I was given the opportunity to be included in the Sponsorship Program through the selection of Neighborhood Group under Kinderhaus ADDIS Sponsorship Scheme.
After I started getting this support, I have been provided with all the necessary school materials, such as exercise books, pencils, pens and school uniform, shoes, one hot nutritious meal a day and coverage of school fee.
I attended my primary cycle education at Meserete Ethiopia Primary School from grade 1 to 8 and took the Primary School Leaving Certificate Examination (grade 8) in which I scored passing marks. Then I was assigned at Shimelis Habte Secondary and Preparatory School where I attended Grade 9 and 10. At the end of grade 10, I prepared myself to take the Ethiopian National Examination, but I couldnt score a passing mark to join the Preparatory Class. Due to this I decided to enroll at Addis Ababa Tegbareed Technical and Vocational Skill Training Institute to continue my education in the field of Purchasing and Supplies Management. After studying for three years, I was able to graduate as of July, 2012.
After graduating, I got a job opportunity in my profession and was employed as of August 2012 at the Pepsi Cola Factory as an Assistant Distributor to the whole Sellers in Adama town, 100 Kilometers to the east of the city of Addis Ababa, in Oromia Regional State. This has enabled me to be selb-sufficient and I have already started helping my father and two sisters economically. I have a vision to change me and my familiy life completely.
During my school years, I used my time wisely and tried to give full attention to my education. I used to wake up early in the morning and go to school with my friends on time and did my homework and assignment as well as different project works; but my results were the average, not very satisfactory. However, in the end I was able to reach this level.
I cant find enough words to express my pleasure and gratefulness to the support I have been getting from Kinderhaus ADDIS since you helped me to become self-reliant and self-sustained. I am very thankful for all the support I have been getting through the bridge of the Integrated Holistic Approach-Urban Development Project (IHA-UDP).
I know I wouldnt have become what I am today if Kinderhaus ADDIS did not support me with all the provisions of my educational and basic needs.
Yohannes T.
N.B. Since he is out of Addis and because of his very busy schedule at work (working late hours and weekends), he could not come to Addis to put his message on paper. Therefore, IHA-UDP had to interview him by telephone and send the message to you.
